The Night Sculpin is built to solve a specific problem: unweighted streamers move great but stay too high, while heavy streamers sink fast but move like a rock. This pattern uses a spun wool head that is shaped to dive and wobble, while the articulated body kicks wildly behind it. The result is a neutrally buoyant fly that hovers in the strike zone and pushes a ton of water.
Why we love it:
The "Keel" Design: The hook rides point-up, allowing you to crawl this fly over rocks and logs where the biggest browns hide without snagging constantly.
Neutral Buoyancy: The spun wool head soaks up water to get heavy, but maintains enough buoyancy to "hover" on the pause rather than crashing to the bottom. This pause is usually when the fish eats.
The Profile: With its broad head and marabou/flash body, it perfectly mimics a sculpin or crayfish fleeing along the bottom.

Guide Tip: This is a "jerk-strip" fly. Don't just strip it steadily. Give it a hard, sharp strip to make the head dive and the tail kick, then pause for a second. That erratic, wounded action is what triggers the predatory instinct in large trout.
