The Stimulator is perhaps the most famous attractor dry fly ever created. It doesn't imitate one specific bug; it imitates all the big, tasty ones. With its bushy profile and swept-back wing, it looks exactly like a Golden Stonefly, a Hopper, or a large Caddis. It is designed to ride high in heavy, fast water where other dry flies would drown, making it the perfect choice for pounding the banks of freestone rivers.
Why we love it:
The Flotation: The hollow deer hair wing and dense palmered hackle create a fly that floats like a cork, even in rough whitewater.
The Profile: The "down-wing" shape perfectly matches the silhouette of an adult stonefly or caddis at rest on the water.
The Trigger: The contrast between the yellow abdomen and the hot orange thorax acts as a visual trigger that fish can spot from the bottom of deep pools.

Guide Tip: This is arguably the best "searching" dry fly for fast water. Because it is so buoyant, it is excellent for a "Dry-Dropper" rig. Tie a piece of tippet to the bend of the hook and hang a bead head nymph 2 feet below it. The Stimulator acts as your strike indicator and often catches the biggest fish of the day.
