The name says it all. When the fishing gets tough, this is the fly you tie on to change your luck.
Designed by the legendary John Barr, the Slump Buster is a heavy-hitting, non-articulated streamer that proves you don't need a massive, double-hook articulated monstrosity to move big fish. It relies on a heavy bead head and a perfectly proportioned fur strip (traditionally pine squirrel) that creates a dense, baitfish profile. It sinks like a rock, pushes water, and breathes with an intoxicating, undulating swimming motion that wakes up lethargic trout and turns a bad day on the river around.
Why we love it:
The Movement: The natural hide and fur strip traps water and pulses constantly, giving the fly incredible lifelike action even on the pause or during a slow swing.
The Sink Rate: Armed with a heavy bead and a slim wire-ribbed body, it cuts through the current and gets down into the strike zone immediately, exactly where sulking fish are holding.
The Castability: Because it packs all this action into a compact, single-hook chassis, it is an absolute dream to cast all day on a standard 5 or 6-weight rod without wearing out your shoulder.
Quantity: Sold in packs of 6.
Guide Tip: Don't just strip this fly—swing it. Cast it down and across the current, let that heavy bead drag it down, and allow it to swing tightly through the holding seams. The natural current will make that fur collar and tail breathe like a struggling baitfish or leech, making it an incredibly easy meal for a hungry brown trout to intercept.
