The Purple Haze is essentially a Parachute Adams that decided to put on a party suit. For reasons scientists still argue about, trout have a distinct weakness for the color purple. This pattern keeps the proven silhouette of the Adams, which mimics almost any mayfly, but swaps the grey body for a vibrant purple dubbing. It is often the only fly that works when fish are refusing natural-colored patterns.
Why we love it:
The Trigger: The purple body contrasts sharply against the sky, making it stand out in a drift of natural insects.
The Visibility: The bright white parachute post acts as a sighter, allowing you to track the fly easily in foam lines or riffles.
The Float: The horizontal hackle parachute wraps distribute weight evenly, letting the fly land softly and ride flush in the film.

Guide Tip: This is your best "slump buster." If you are casting a standard Adams or BWO to rising fish and getting refusals, don't change size, change color. Switch to a Purple Haze in the same size. That slight shift in spectrum is often exactly what triggers the strike.
