The "Old School" realistic hopper that still out-fishes the new stuff.
Before modern foam flies existed, Dave's Hopper was the gold standard, and for good reason. Unlike foam patterns that float high like a cork, the spun deer hair head and natural body of this fly allow it to ride lower in the surface film. This perfectly mimics a grasshopper that is waterlogged and struggling to stay afloat, a signal of vulnerability that big, educated trout recognize instantly.
Why we love it:
The Silhouette: The spun and clipped deer hair head creates a perfect, broad-shouldered profile that pushes water and creates a "wake" when twitched.
Natural Materials: The combination of deer hair and hackle creates a much softer, "buggier" footprint on the water than synthetic foam.
The "Soggy" Factor: As it absorbs a little water, it sits deeper, imitating a drowning insect. This is often when the biggest fish decide to eat it.
Quantity: Sold in packs of 12.
Guide Tip: This is the pattern to use on slow, glassy pools where fish are inspecting flies closely. Foam can look artificial in flat water; Dave's Hopper looks like organic protein. Cast it hard against the bank and give it a subtle twitch.
