The only upgrade a classic Elk Hair Caddis ever needed.
This is our absolute go-to caddis pattern. While the original Elk Hair Caddis is legendary, adding a CDC (Cul de Canard) underwing changes the game entirely. The CDC feathers trap air bubbles and add lifelike movement that stiff hackle just can't match. It sits lower in the film than a standard high-riding caddis, perfectly mimicking an adult insect that is vulnerable on the surface.

The CDC Underwing: It adds natural buoyancy without the need for excessive gel, and the soft fibers move in the water like struggling legs.
The Profile: It maintains that classic "tent wing" silhouette that trout recognize instantly as a caddis.

Guide Tip: Don't just dead drift this fly. Caddis are active insects. Give it a tiny twitch or "skitter" it across the surface at the end of your drift to mimic an adult female returning to the water to lay eggs. That movement triggers violent strikes.
