Designed by Craig Mathews of Blue Ribbon Flies, the Sparkle Dun is arguably the most effective mayfly dry fly ever created for picky fish. Unlike a traditional high-riding dun, this pattern sits low in the surface film, not on top of it. It mimics a Blue Winged Olive that is struggling to escape its nymphal shuck, a stage known as the "stillborn" or emerger phase. To a trout, this signals a helpless meal that won't fly away.
Why we love it:
The Shuck: The crinkled synthetic tail imitates the trailing shuck of the nymph, which provides a trigger of "vulnerability" that standard dry flies lack.
The Floatation: The flared deer hair wing keeps the fly floating effectively while allowing the body to sit flush with the water's surface.
The Silhouette: The olive body and distinct wing profile create a realistic footprint that fools fish in flat, slow-moving water where they have time to inspect the fly.

Guide Tip: This is your "Technical Water" solver. When you see fish sipping gently in flat water and refusing your standard parachute dries, switch to this. Apply floatant only to the deer hair wing, leaving the tail and body to sink slightly into the film.
