Gary LaFontaine wrote the book on caddisflies (literally), and this was his masterpiece. The secret is the loose "sparkle" sheath around the body. It traps air bubbles, perfectly mimicking the gas-filled shuck that natural caddis pupae use to rocket to the surface. When trout are keying on caddis but refusing dry flies, they are almost always eating this specific stage.
